Zuffa announced on Monday afternoon that they have successfully taken down and seized the records of www.cagewatcher.eu, a website that illegally streamed two UFC pay-per-view events, including the most recent one, UFC 169.

UFC has obtained details of the streaming site’s userbase, including email addresses, IP addresses, user names and information pertaining to individuals who watched pirated UFC events including UFC 169. Also recovered were chat transcripts from the website. Using this data, UFC will work with Lonstein Law Office to prosecute identified infringers.

Lonstein Law Office has successfully prosecuted hundreds of claims for the UFC organization for sites illegally streaming content and individual users since 2007. UFC’s status as the industry leader in pay-per-view television has helped it become a leader in cracking down on companies and individuals watching and facilitating the watching of pay-per-view events online, without paying.

And that’s why nothing on the Internet is free. I can imagine the folks that were streaming those PPVs are collectively pooing themselves.

    from another user comment:

That’s a dumb move by Zuffa. Shut down the stream, sure, but NEVER go after the watchers. They are the fans, they are your lifeblood, without them the sport does not exist.

If anything, the popularity of streams shows a massive flaw in the PPV pricing. I’ve watched every single UFC event since 2008 and I haven’t paid for a single one. Why? Because I know nobody who’s into MMA enough to stay up all night until 6am when the main event usually begins. If you have a group of friends, $50 for a PPV is not much, but I watch most events by myself from a small computer screen at home.

Also, guess what? Because of those “illegal streams” I actually bought a plane ticket to the other side of the fucking planet and went to see an UFC event live in Las Vegas. I spent a ton of money on merchandise in the UFC store. I’m planning to go to several events this year in Europe if I have the time and money. I’ve spent an eternity getting my friends hooked too, as well as everyone else I know. NONE OF THAT MONEY WOULD HAVE BEEN SPENT ON YOUR FUCKING BRAND WITHOUT ILLEGAL STREAMS, ZUFFA.

The UFC is built by pirates, streams and illegal downloaders. If there were no illegal streams or torrents, I would’ve never saw a single event. I never would’ve cared one bit. I would’ve happily lived watching free K-1 events on Eurosport, because guess what? Everyone else would have too. Without streaming, there would be no UFC.

If you bought every event, it’d cost you up to $2000 per year. Having to spend thousands of dollars every year just to keep up with a sport you love is fucking ludicrous. If every game cost $50 to watch, would the NHL or NBA even exist?
