St-Pierre: This time I’m fighting more on instinct Karim Zidan November 15, 2012 News Will his long-awaited UFC return only days away, Georges St Pierre is soaking in the moment. It took 18 months on the sidelines for the dominant welterweight champ to realize how much he missed fighting, confessing in the pre-fight press conference that the “fire is back” and that he is prepared for the obstacles ahead. “You never know just what you have until it is taken away from you,” St-Pierre confessed at the pre-fight press conference.”Before my last fight (against Jake Shields, April 2011) I was like ‘Man, another fight and weight-cut, I cannot wait for it to be over and go on vacation’. But now the fire is back, and I cannot wait to fight and get back to doing what I do.” The champ is also aware of the criticism he has received over his recent performances and is constantly pressured by fans to finish fights. He agrees and believes the solution lies in his mental approach. “I have been thinking too much in some of my fights, and when you do that you are slower and not aggressive.” St Pierre admit. “I’m not going to think too much in there. I’m going to trust that I’ve prepared correctly and let my instincts guide me. I don’t want to think too much in the fight; I want to let my instincts tell me what to do in there. This time I’m fighting more on instinct.” During the press conference GSP acknowledged his opponent, interim champ Carlos Condit and confirmed that he believes that he is the best the welterweight division has to offer. “I didn’t want to come back and fight an easier guy. I want to be the top guy and I need to fight the top guy, and I need to thank the UFC for the opportunity, and I’m very happy to be here to fight him.” Whilst we will not know the result of Saturday night’s main event, we can be certain that Georges will do everything in his capabilities to ensure he leaves as the undisputed welterweight champion. “I am a proud man and I want to prove that I am still No1. I’m scared to be back, there will be butterflies but the key is to make the butterflies fly in formation.” Follow Karim Zidan (@TheFlyingKneeTO) for all the latest MMA news and updates.
