Earlier today, Sherdog.com reported that Russian middleweight Alexander Shlemenko sustained several injuries in a car accident Wednesday night in Russia.
It was reported that the car accident occurred when his car was struck by a drunk driver. Shlemenko was riding in the passenger seat and was immediately taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries. No surgery was necessary.
Although the injuries were not considered career-threatening, Shlemenko will be sidelined for at least 3 months to nurse a broken collarbone and a dislocated thumb, a process which includes undergoing extensive physical therapy. Sherdog confirmed the news with Alexei Zhernakov, the vice president of Shlemenko’s gym, RusFighters Sport Club.
Shlemenko is a veteran of over 50 MMA fights with 27 knockout victories. Since his loss to Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard back in 2010, Shlemenko has been on an 8-fight win streak including a 2nd middleweight tournament win. The accident is a massive setback for the two-time Bellator middleweight tournament winner, as he is just coming off a spectacular knock-out of Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa at Super Fight Leagues 2 in India.
